Welcome to Sajjanpur is a very sweet and innocent kind of a film....reminds u of the Malgudi days....All characters have done well specially Shreyas Talpade....he is indeed a very fine actor. Also Ravi Jhankal as Munni Bai is outstanding. He deserves an award for this role. Rest of the cast like Illa Arun, Amrita Rao and others have done well........surprisingly the Music is also very soothing to hear and it has some really good lyrics also...Shantanu Moitra has given good music. Last but not the least director Shyam Benegal who has given some real gems has done it again....He is ineed a great sense of film making. In short Welcome to Sajjanpur is a great team effort. Dont go with very high expectations, but its certainly a likeable and watchable. 3 on 5 stars.

Welcome to Sajjanpur

A political Satire that is what they call Welcome to SajjanPur . A village originally known as Durjanpur but renamed to Sajjanpur at the behest of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. It seems Mr. Benegal wanted to stay away from controversies and has taken a very soft stance rather than delivering some hard hitting punches at the bureaucracy. It is about a man who aspires to be a novelist but due to the lack of opportunities ends up as a letter writer at the local post office. It is through the letter writing of this person the movie tries to touch upon social, economical and political issues and at the same time it also manages to generate some humor out of it The drawback of the movie is the Dehati accent it is sometimes difficult to figure out the jokes. Even a fine actor like Shreyas Talpade does not seem comfortable with it. There is some twist at the end of the movie which was not required but does no harm to the original plot. The movie opens which the song Sitaram which is a nice fusion of American country music with India classical Instruments. There is another nice hummable song Mita Marz. Overall it is an Ok movie but more is expected when the Director is Shyam Benegal and the protagonist is Shreyas Talpade. Can be enjoyed in theaters but not highly recommended.

You are cordially invited ? N?joy your stay at Sajjanpur (Watch it for its sheer rustic humor)

The Plot:
Mahadev is popular letter writer who aspires to be a novel writer. He makes his fellow villagers life easy (miserable) by his writing. Various lives in Sajjanpur revolves around highly educated Mahadev and you keep wondering (like Mahadev) in this world of e-mail, SMS and MMS, post card is such important part of these uneducated souls. Mr. Benegal three cheers to your plot.
Ratings: **** (4-Star)

Screenplays:
First few scenes are very well written to establish the identity of the characters.  All small and significant stories are woven effectively. Mr. Benegal tried to touch all urban as well as rural current issues through excellently directed screenplays like nuclear deal, frequent power shutdown, uneducated MPs and their fraud degrees, Murder suspect and eunuch contesting Panchayat election, Bal vidhwa and her remarriage, kidney sell, SEZ plant etc. There is either message or sarcasrism in dialogues which are delivered smartly. Screenplays remind me old goldies like Chupake Chupake, Bawarchi, Chitchor, Golmaal, Ankur and many more.
Few scenes between Mahadev and childhood love Kamala are repetitive. Dream songs were unnecessary. But you will surely enjoy the ride to Sajjanpur.
Ratings: *** (3-Star)

Casting:
Ekdam Mast. Shreyas as Mahadev has immense screen-presence. He is confident, spontaneous and impeccable. He is there in almost each frame but you still want to see him more and more. I don’t mind calling him Amol Palekar of 2008. National Award is not far for this immensely talented actor. Amrita as a wife longing for husband is surprising excellent. She needs good director to extract best in her. Other supporting cast justified their character. Ravikishen as a compounder is superb and Ravi Jhankal as eunuch is superlative. But best of them all is Illa Arun – a desperate mother determined to marry her daughter with a dog. She is on screen only for twice or thrice but her dialogue delivery, her lines can’t stop you to jump on seat with laughter. She is winner. So is Divya Dutta and all characters are treat to watch.
Ratings:*****(5-Star)

Music:
Music is just okey-dokey. The only situational song 'Aadmi Azaad Hai Desh' that carries a message about democratic India and human rights makes an impact.  'Munnibai' song too touches the current issues.  Ashok Mishra handled department of lyrics. 'Ek Meetha Marz De Ke' written by Swanand Kirkire has melodic touch.
Shantanu could not give us soothing music as good as Parineeta.
Ratings: **(2-Star)

Other:
You will wonder is that a real Gaon or a set? Great art work by Samir Chanda ! Movie rules mostly on its dialogues. Superb job by Ashok Mishra. This is a true depiction of today’s India moving towards modernity - there is computer, mobile connectivity and cable but still lacks in education. Lot of thought has been given to each small thing cloths, body language, behavior and customs. Everybody knows the kind of movie Mr. Benegal has given to audience but this genre of comedy and commercial cinema is commendable.
Ratings: **** (4-Star)

Suv’s verdict:
This movie may or may not appeal urban audience but its going to be huge hit in rural circuit as they will be able to relate with the characters. Instead of watching the slapstick, ajar, meaningless and cheap comedy, visit Benegal’s Sajjanpur. Sometime I really wonder why movies like Singh is King or Welcome are super hit… Anyways…
You are welcome to Sajjanpur so don’t miss the invitation and have a great stay there.
Overall Ratings: ***1/2 (3 and ½ Star)

Bland Khichdi,,,,,Shyam Benegal ki AAg
Sep 20, 2008

Overall Rating

Benegal did a RGV Ki Aag here..He made a bland Oat khichdi.

Oat coz it was nutricious for the brain but was dull, borig and unexciting to the sensibilities. This is a movie which really made we want to shout OOOOOOOOOOOhhhh noooo whenever song sequence came.

A cross between Nadia ke Paar and other Kasba wali movies, this movie failed in so many aspects, It was neither funny ( except last scence of illa Arun), nor wholly satirical. Nor village ki neither shahar ki.It lost in between where female characters are illiterate and makes pot or fetch water but during the dream sequence dons Capris and Leather jackets.

Benegal tried to raise some social issues like Bal vivaah, widow marriage, unfair practices in election and democracy. He even tried to copy the story of Shabnam Masi , an ex MLA of Katni whho was "Kinnar".

Shreyas was wasted and so do other powerful actors.Illa is Damn good.

Avoid this one ,, be a durjan and give it a miss.

P.S : How utterly dissappointed i am ....Mr. Benegal and Shreyas u toooooooooo

This movie is crap....damn boring....n totally dsapntng....[:(]....hard to beleive but the director like shyam benegal(i respect him truly for his contribution to indian cinema) has come up with such a faltoo film that doesn't deserve even a single star....jst forget 2 watch this movie....baqwas....fully faltu...a character driven film with poor plot, poor(?)direction n some characters literally sucks.i dnt knw why did an experienced filmmaker like Benegal fall prey to the trend of dream songs? Not only is the song placement flawed the soundtrack is a big bore as well.....shreyas is OK but not at his best.....well overall it's better to watch any other movie bt not 'welcome to sajjanpur'...from me....00000/5.... { P.S : HAVE GIVEN A STAR BECAUSE OF THE RULE-------> "Please resolve following and resubmit 1.
