Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma Directed by: Ayan Mukerji Wake up Sidâ?¦the title says everything about what you are going see for next two and half hour. But itâ??s little different than you imagine. After watching this one you wonder whether itâ??s a good movie or an average flick. This is story of Siddharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) who is totally aimless in his life, as for sure. He knows only one thing, enjoy life fully. Then he meets this â??Wanna be independentâ?? hard working ambitious girl Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma). These two who are exactly opposite to each other becomes friends. They live exactly different lives. She works hard and he party harder. Still they find that innocence in each other. Sid leaves his home due to his fight with his parents as he fails his graduation exam and starts to live in with Aisha where she guides him to a life where drinking shots of tequila is not everything. His passion for photography helps him to get a job at same magazine where Aisha works as an assistant and then movie turns a lot filmy (even more than before). The movie is totally about todayâ??s young attitude where you find two contrast personalities hard workers and wasted youngsters. Ranbir Kapoors has given his best performance so far as a childish guy who is just into all fun. Konkona suites to her role but there is nothing new to see in her. The only thing that makes movie above average is its direction and cinematography. Being very young Ayan makes this movie very fresh though it has nothing new to offer in its story. Senseless jokes are totally avoided by him which makes movie a little serious. Cinematography refreshes you a lot. Costumes play an important role in this one. Cartoon Tees, colorful boxers and socks makes Ranbir really cute and gives him that childish look. While Konkanas costumes are very down to earth which are used by a common girl each day. Most importantly itâ??s practical. You can easily relate yourself to any character of the movie. There is no Lecturebaji and dialogues are totally meaningful. You can actually live the movie for a while because itâ??s very simple. In one line you can say itâ??s a dull story with a really fresh look. Itâ??s something between lame and awesome. Massage of the movie is clear and everybody knows it but this time its little practical. My rating: 3 out of 5 Not a must watch but you can give it a shot.

first things first, the movie really does not offer anything new that one should feel good about, i find that it was mili-bhagat of KJo and his gang along with some of the movie critics, to give a positive spin about the movie and then the ball keeps rolling... i mean movie is okay, strictly okay, nothing great that everyone is going ga-ga about (though sufficient feel-good factors in movie, that one feels happy after watching the movie)...

here are some points from my side

1. we have seen lakshya, that was much better

2. why does konkana fall in love with ranbir, we have one scene where kashmira shah is suggesting to hit on ranbir and so she starts getting attracted, i thought the intent was purely sexual when kashmira suggested it! or was it one outing with rahul khanna that made the choice by rejection (of rahul)... same way why does ranbir fall in love with konkana, was it the ohh-so-frank rejection in first placeby konkaka?

3. supriya pathak kapoor can surely do better than that, her character was just over the board, just not real to feel for, and we have seen enough of characters who cannot speak english, it was not funny at all!

4. the scene where ranbir is clicking pics of his neighbour and her son, that was supposed to realization point for ranbir, but it just lacked the depth to feel for...

5. the movie was predictable, you could make out whats going to happen

overall, save your money if you havent wasted it yet! i am sure there are better movies to come this year...

After being appreciated at Kolkata Fashion Week, designer Kiran did an encore at Zoya. Rao's collection incorporates traditional and fusion ethnic wear.

Long sweeping hemlines, streamlined tunics, dresses worn with churidars are the most predominant styles which could work well for day wear as well as evening wear. Copper, charcoal, wood browns, foliage green and rust are the colours picked up from the palettes. Subtle embroideries on washed silks, antique printed and striped chiffons and a lot more have been used for a royal look. Fitted pants, blousons and bias skirts give global appeal, while ankle skimming dresses, long shirt waisters and maxis add a regal touch. "I think despite the festive feel, the collection is really comfortable and beautiful. For me festivals are about getting the feel of it even in your style statement, Indian ethnicity which I can feel in these designs", said actor Vidya Balan. Tisca, on the other hand carried a black outfit, courtesy; Kiran herself, which was well teamed up with statement making accessory pieces. Nahciket too seemed impressed with the design as he was busy feeling and assessing the garments.

What is your Aim In Life ?

The first think that a career counselor had asked me in  a group discussion when I was in my 10th standard was – What is your aim in life ? I was stumped went numb , not because I didn’t have any answers . This thought never came to my  mind as I  was too pre-occupied with other things ignoring the fact that one day I have to choose my identity in this competitive world . But one day this ignorance leads to failure that allows others to demand of you an answer to the  same question again . It is then when you know that you are left with no choice  with no choice but to grow up , leave the child in you behind & transform to a man .

Ayan’s Writing Moments     This reluctance to leave your childhood & teenage fun days , aimlessness , ignorance is what Ayan Mukherjee is trying to depict through his protagonist Siddharth Mehra who wants to have fun  all his life , but is challenged by the hard complexities of life in the shape of his first big failure & has to choose his true calling & wake up . His life is comforted by the advent Of Ayesha Banerjee  an independent girl who becomes an anchor in Sid’s life & shows him the way. Sids transformation is constructed superbly by Ayan who has penned an exciting screenplay . Though the movie is extremely simple in idea , Ayan brings in some superb moments in the screenplay that are relatable & heart warming .Right from the first scene to last there are umpteen moments that you will find have happened in your own life . It is this relatablity that helps the viewers interested in the proceedings.

That Ayan is  a wonderful writer is shown with the way he has written the smaller players in the story not allowing them  a different space & treating them as characters who come in & out as Sid’s Journey progresses . But Ayan still manages to flesh them out by giving each their moments . Wether they are Laxmi’s  outburst at Sid telling him he is not  the only one who has failed & her frustration with weight gain or talented Samit Sen’s  scene when he shares   the real reason with Sid on why his  girlfriend dumped him or The delightful Kashmeera Shah (watch out Miss Rakhi Sawant she can act you can’t) enquiring Konkana about her  sex life is hilarious  . Even the girl who hates Ranbir for his privileges instead of her being the most deserved one  & Neha the girl who falls for her  have been given their moment to shine . But for me the cutest scene in the movie  is when the little kid gaps at her double aged Kashmeera showing signs of childhood first love  . Infact   Kashmeera’s character points to first  signs of sexuality in Sid as well. This is surprising for a movie that aims at being realistic but has no mention of sexual awakening , an issue that is so prevalent in youngsters of today .Perhaps that’s the Dharma Effect emphasizing on a clean movie

Ayan the Visionary Filmmaker

That Ayan is an excellent writer is proven , but  not all good writers can make for superb visionary filmmaker but Ayan scores here as well . That he isgreatly inspired from Farhan style of Cinema is evident even though he is making a movie for Dharma . The way he has extracted performances  from even the smallest characters right from the kid to the servant to the friends & others authenticates that . So does his handling of scenes & use of music  . The Musical score& background are used to fill in the silences where nothing is said using the scores as a means to convey those emotions . He even knows when to use the silences , using them in the most dramatic of scenes like the confrontation scenes between Sid & his parents or later with Konkana , never allowing such scenes to go into melodramatic territory .His use of Mumbai ( I got that right O.K.)   as a character as well depicting its spirit & welcoming nature for outsiders who start feeling at home in a few days is once again a piece of genius from the young filmmaker . Though the film is polished in look , he never allows te camer to take over the story with strange camera angles as some people in the factory m ight do .  The  film moves at a leisurly pace , but it is justified as it showcases the slow lazy life that Sid lives & never once does its pace bore you  .

 The little Screenpaly issues

That Ayan understands Sid’s character to the core is quite apparent  , he must have led that kind of life himself to know it so well . But the screenplay does have its glitches . The sudden decision of Sid to do a job is not justified having  shown him as lazy , aimless boy . Some more scenes could have been included to make him realize that . Also Sid gets a job & success pretty quickly something that is hard to fathom  . Life on the other hand is not that easy for an undergraduate in real life .

The Ensemble Performances

There are many mundane moments of silences which are not easy to depict on screen  from paper , but Ayan is helped by the excellent ensemble cast . Apart from the brilliant support cast the big players too pitch in with their best  . Kher is natural as the father &  helps bringing in the tender  moments to life through his acting talent . The underused Supriya Kapur is a delight to watch . Konkana , though  is not at her best . In  the role of a girl who thinks she is matured , but likes having as much fun as Sid she  is at times  inconsistent making her look artificial , while in  some scenes she is brilliant. Having said this ,  her chemistry with Ranbir works as there are some lovely romantic moments written between them  .

 Ranbir –The Perfect Sid

But Wake Up Sid is clearly a film that belongs to an actor who is a pleasure to watch on screen  , the most talented of this generation Ranbir Kapoor . Ranbir is spontaneity at its best creating an identifiable natural character out of Sid providing a certain amount of laziness though his body language something that is inherent to the character . He coveys all emotion through eyes & is restraint to the core . The man is showing rare signs of maturity , something that many other actors achieve quite late in their careers .

Inspite of some discrepancies Wake Up Sid is an easy watch ., We can all relate to his coming of age drama , self realization journey   , finding his true self . Some are still trying to find it  , some are choosing their parents whishes , some are still struggling in life . Sid is in all of us.

Not yet made plans for the weekend? Well then, make sure Wake up Sid is definitely part of your plans. Dharma Productios has proved once again that they give only the best to their audience. Ayan Mukherji, the director of Wake up Sid and Rani Mukherjee’s cousin has made his own identity and has a long way to go due to his excellent directorial skills. Since his debut with Saawariya , Ranbir Kapoor has been constantly under the spotlight and with Wake Up Sid which is just his third release, Ranbir fans who can’t get enough of the youth icon on the big screen, get the opportunity to feast on and admire this ‘boy next door’.

The plot starts off with Siddharth Mehra, (Ranbir Kapoor) living the life of a typical pampered college student. His life revolves around his friends, computer games and partying. He along with his two best friends two best friends, Rishi (Namit Das) and Laxmi (Shikha Talsania) live life to the fullest. He barely interacts  with his mother Sarita (Supriya Pathak) and takes his father Ram Mehra (Anupam Kher) and all the money earned by him for granted.

Then enters Aisha Banerjee (Konkana Sen), an ambitious and serious girl from Kolkata who has come to the big city of Mumbai, to make her dream of becoming a great writer come true. Her first friend in the city is ironically the carefree Siddharth Mehra. He along with his friends help her settle down and she also becomes involved in Sid’s life of endless parties and aimless activities. Life cannot always be pleasant and so in Sid’s case a series of events occur that alters his lifestyle and bam! we see an entirely new face to him as he copes with his situation.

Konkana, who has won two National Awards has proved her mettle and shows she can pull off any character with ease and though she looks much older than Ranbir, their chemistry is endearing. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy have come up with great peppy music that suits the theme of the film. The movie is an extremely refreshing break from all the duds we have been faced with like Dil Bole Hadippa and Wanted and is a very inspiring movie for the young generation. A must watch for any movie lover. Wink

Oh gosh I really can't be objective about this film. It totally won me over! Ranbir is great as the poor spoilt little rich kid. Unlike some films where the spoilt kid is irritating, and smarmy, Sid is still a really good person, who helps out someone who is essentially a stranger. But of course when the favour is repaid, Sid's upbringing comes out. Its totally logical that if you've been waited on hand and foot for your whole life, you really wouldn't have a clue as to how much work life can be.

Although the plot was quite predictable (oh I totally saw that career path coming, who didn't) I felt it worked really well. It was handled in a subtle way, that made me belive in the characters and the story. Konkona Sen Sharma is great in her role, but of course This is Ranbirs movie, and he carries it with great aplomb!

I'm going out to buy the soundtrack as soon as I get paid, and I'm going to the cinema to watch it again! Cant wait for the DVD.

All in all, if you like light hearted yet melodramatic coming of age films, then this is one you cant go past!

Wake Up Sid

Wake Up Sid is the story of Sidharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor), a lazy, unmotivated slacker from Mumbai. He thrives around his two best friends, Rishi (Namit Das) and Laxmi (Shikha Talsania), very rarely communicates with his mother Sarita (Supriya Pathak) and takes his father Ram Mehra (Anupam Kher), and all his hard earned wealth for granted. Aisha Bannerjee (Konkona Sen Sharma), an aspiring writer from Calcutta, comes to Bombay to realize her dreams as a writer. Despite their contrasting personalities, Sid becomes Aisha's first friend in the city. A series of circumstances and events compel him to take stock of his life and take a hard look at himself.

Some scenes stand out like the scene where Sid finds out that he has failed or the confrontation scene between him and his father or the scene where Laxmi yells at Sid that he never cares about her problems or the scene where Sid hands his first paycheck to his father or the scene where Sid lashes back at Aisha. But in between there is nothing happening and one gets a feeling of watching some documentary.

‘Wake up Sid’ is a light, pleasant romance that frames the story of a young man’s journey from innocence to maturity. The ambience is hip and Today, within the sober, low-key framework of real life patterns. The flow is smooth, but the plot is a bit contrived and not able to avoid a few clichés.

Siddharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) is a rich, spoilt brat who has failed his undergraduate exams. In a family showdown he leaves home to move in with Aisha Banerji (Konkona Sen), and gets a job as a photographer in a local magazine. By the end, he has become a responsible son, having fallen in love with his older friend. He has also learnt maturity---read learning to cook an egg and clean his room!

Ayaan Mukherji has worked hard on the script, and manages to infuse freshness and frothiness into the flow of the film without resorting to SRK-type gimmicks or loud conversation. Some of the scenes seem repetitive, and could do with some slicker editing. The pace is slow at times, especially in the latter half, and the ending seems clichéd.

What makes the wafer-thin story rise above the average is the excellent performance. Ranbir Kapoor looks and lives the part of a confused and rather depressed, young boy who seems perpetually bewildered by everything. Konkona Sen is well cast into the role of an intelligent, independent woman. Anupam Kher deserves special mention, for he stands out in the much-beaten role of the inflexible father. Supriya Pathak essays the right balance of frustration and affection.

The music is fresh and complements the narration, while settings are minimal, a far cry from the garish mega-movies of Karan Johar. The movie relies solely on a competent script. The screenplay is rich, lingering lovingly on beautiful Mumbai.

Lakshya meets Taare Zameen Par meets Rock On meets Luck By Chance. Add some more freshness in terms of simple screenplay and dialogues and fantastic visuals - that's Wake Up Sid!! And the former sentence is not criticism but actually a complement. Cause all the movies are so great and is treating little bit similar subject that comparisons will definitely be there. But still, the movie stands on it own.

Its a story about Siddharth Mehra a spoilt brat living without any inhibitions. He gets to learn his lessons when he fails in life for the first time. And as all know, failure is a key to success [yup, the line is overused, but...] Konkona plays Aisha a girl who wants to be independent, on her own, and that's why she has come to Mumbai. I think this role looks a bit like extension to her role in Luck By Chance. Many sequences do remind me of that. But all is forgiven though. Cause it is not intended.

Movie deals with the fine line area of getting matured suddenly after fun years of college. It is hard for many people. Including me. I and most of us have that Sid inside them, which never goes out. 'Sid' tells them to do whatever they 'want' to do in life. But the fact is, that most of us end up doing the regular stuff cause its 'life' that doesnt allow us to do so. Also in other case shown here, some spoilt brats are fed with silver spoons that they cant see harsh realities, making them hiding from it. I don't care attitude developes there. Ranbir shows this mixed bag dillema quite well. I liked his earler both movies too, not a big fan of him but yes, he does act well. He is so sweet as Sid. Who is outspoken, tells whatever he feels.

Wake up SID promos seemed promising, in fact it's music tracks too seemed nice. The promoters also did a good job while promoting and publicizing the film, when they put up new ads of the movie everyday in d papers describing wat SID did 'unusual' from the 'rest' on that day. But, when it really matters, i feel, the movie doesn't live upto the hype at all!

Just imagine the concept of the movie when it was being promoted, it seemed to promise a lot of fun, with SID going in college and enjoying with his friends and partying all the time. True, this was there, but portrayed very poorly and the main reason for that being the absence of the 'fun' part! Ya, dats true, the college days which could have been so 'green' seemed really 'grey' and 'bland'.

The flow of the movie was quite slow and it really lacked the energy to atleast motivate you(mature audience) to carry on watching the movie. There are many a cliches and the story seems quite predictable, the promos too hinted a predictable story but the way the movie was presented was very dull.

Well, some positives from the movie could be the acting of Konkana, she gives a good performance but again she really did not have enough support from her co-stars in this section as it was a pretty mediocre performance from Ranbir, who could have been much better in many ways. Rahul Khanna was average, so was Anupam Kher, but both did not have much roles to play. Kainaz Motiwala, seemed charming though.

Overall, not a good movie to watch as it could have been a lot better and more fun too.

Don't be surprised if, at the end of the movie, the guy next to u, might just tell u, 'Wake up dude..'

An old plot wrapped in a New Age package with nothing exceptional as expected.

To be straight, if you are expecting yet another, youthful movie on the lines of “Dil Chahta Hai” or “Rang De Basanti” then you may feel a bit low after watching “Wake Up Sid”. Because the movie has nothing refreshing to show about the vibrant college life or energetic celebrating days of the youth. In fact, it hasn’t got the colorful content as projected by its interesting promotional campaign and movie stills.

The movie starts off in a light mood, where Ranbir is shown lazily preparing for his college exams. Later he meets Konkana in a late night party, who has just arrived in Mumbai and becomes her first friend in the city. With more e-mail exchanges and Ranbir helping her decorating her new apartment, a friendly relationship starts building between the two. But all this just keeps happening in a very laid off manner and the viewer desperately waits for something more interesting to unfold on the screen. Till intermission the only scene which rises above the usual stuff is the interview scene between Rahul Khanna & Konkana.

In the second half, as Ranbir leaves his parent’s house, the movie starts endorsing live in relationship with a cool attitude. Along with that, the story has the same old clashes between rich and middle class ways of living with an added rotten plot of two love triangles incorporated lightly into the script. Keeping more emphasis on the main characters, the writers strangely leave out the parents (Anupam Kher & Supriya Pathak) out of the narration and bring them in whenever they feel like. According to the script the parents don’t even care to know the whereabouts of their only son, after leaving his house in anger.

However, the movie has its moments with two worth watching scenes representing the current generation. One, when both Ranbir and his friend laugh at a break up story and two, when Konkana and Ranbir play around with water bottles. With more such scenes, the movie could have been the latest talk of the town among the younger generation. Moreover, a completely predicable climax also leaves the viewer less entertained in the end. The climax required a great amount of trimming since the movie drags a lot towards its concluding moments.

Performance wise it’s a Konkana movie entirely where she leads from the front with her simple yet gorgeous looks. Her sensuous and soft dialogue delivery wins over the viewer in the first scene itself. Konkana handles Ranbir just like a mature understanding lady, in love with a young innocent boy. Ranbir tries very hard to act real but it’s the fault of the misleading promos that his character looks like lacking the refreshing & interesting look shown in the promotional campaign of the movie. Otherwise he has done a fine job in the role of a confused youngster. Rahul Khanna, Anupam Kher and Kashmira Shah play their small roles impactfully, but Supriya Pathak fails to generate any laughters with her faulty English.

Musically, the soundtrack has nothing capable of making you go dancing or singing. An unexpected let down from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Amit Trivedi. On the other hand, Cinematography captures Mumbai in a cool manner. In short, director Ayan Mukerjee delivers a simple project based on a routine storyline, which moves at a slow pace and has nothing extraordinary or exceptional as expected.

On second thoughts I also have some questions in mind regarding the projects which you may find interesting too.

Why there always have to be a “Hamming Mother Character” in Karan Johar Productions movie, which is supposed to provide a comic relief to the viewers. (Like Kiron Kher in “Dostana” & Supriya Pathak in “Wake Up Sid”)

Why we always have to make movie on love stories alone?

The movie “Wake Up Sid” has a very interesting plot of knowing your hidden talents, where Ranbir finds out that he has got a great unexplored talent of photography. His raw skills also fetch him a job in a leading magazine. Konkana also has a concealed talent of writing which even gets her own column in the magazine. So why the director didn’t thought of using these subplots as the main subject of the story, which could have been a great move. Why only love angles have to be deliberately used in our movies to win over the viewers. I think the Indian viewers are now ready enough to watch some unexplored subjects and not just the usual dragging love stories.

Coming back to “Wake Up Sid”, it’s strictly a multiplex flick which may be liked by Ranbir fans out there but for others it’s just an average movie vaguely talking about the current generation.

WAKE UP SID - ***1/2 A satisfying movie arrives finally. Though it?s minus of d routine bollywood masala, it still succeeds in gripping the audience for 130 mins. Once in a while you come across a movie which touches your heart, rekindles old memories, and each one will some where say, yeah it happened to me, n tender one?s heart melts. This might remind you of Dil Chahta Hai. Sid is a aimless n carefree college going guy who gets up late, bunks class, spends lakhs of dads money thro credit cards, parties late night with his set of friends, plays x box, clicks photos, fancies suave cars and has lost emotional connection with parents. Feeling de JA vu? Many will! Enter Aish, a total opposite of Sid, whom he befriends and helps her in setting her home. Things take an interesting turn when he comes in face of reality as he tries to transform himself and faces varied dynamics of relationships. Kudos to Ayan Mukherji, one can?t say it is his first film, the deft handling of sequences, the maturity he brings to each role needs appreciation. The way the tenderness of relationships has been brought out is excellent. Scenes between Sid and supriya pathak, Sid and anupam kher, Sid and rishi, Sid and laxmi, are heart warming. What distinguishes it from other movies is even the character which has the least role is well defined and well executed. Romance between the lead pair oozes freshness and is treated sensitively. The music of the movie is in tune with concept. The trio of S-E-Loy brings out an album which may not be perfect but has its elements. The title song, iktara and kya karoon linger around even after leaving the hall. It?s good to see karan johar coming out of his cliché forte and making a film with a message. Ranbir Kapoor is excellent; he shows his caliber as an actor once again and gives finesse to his performance. He plays the confused cool dude to the T. He has grown leaps and bounds as an actor, by far of the 3 films this is his best. Hope more is to come from this lad. Konkana as expected of her delivers a neat performance. Both supriya pathak and anupam kher are outstanding and give a mature performance. Vir das and shikha as Sid?s friends show promise. Rahul khanna and kashmira shah leave a mark in their guest appearances. Kainaz is beautiful. On d flip side it is a touch lengthy and cos of the urbane look might appeal only for the multiplex audience. Competition from do knot disturb might also add to its woes. But it?s worth your bucks. So watch it with your friends and enjoy. Chao ‼
