It's always been said that to attain something people sometime have to compromise for something. Sometimes these compromises make the journey to the desired future enjoyable and sometimes, people have nothing but to repent for whatever he had done in the name of compromise. The film, Rock On, rocks on that basic thought only. They, namely Aditya (Farhan), Joe (Arjun), KD and Rob (Luke Kenny), fight hard to take their band 'Magik' to the position of number one. They get the opportunity to hit the music chart with an opportunity won in a competition of Channel V. The music channel also provides them with a chance of recording their first album. But no victory comes without its different effects. Here also, they have to compromise few things and the situation takes Joe away from Aditya. Magik gets closed. Aditya leaves all his friends and turns into a businessman while on the other hand, Joe keeps himself happy with his guitar. Story rolls for ten years. One day Aditya's wife (Prachi) comes to know about Aditya's band Magik and to make Aditya happy, she arranges a reunion party for all his friends who were involved in the band. And the reunion gives a rebirth to the band also. They all fight for another chance at the Channel V stage. Farhan has really overshadowed other actors in his debut film. Others are also looking cool in their respective roles. As far as the film is concerned, it can easily be called a package with visuals mixing properly with audio. Actors are rock stars and their stage presence is superb. While as a film it's a great gift to the viewers, for listeners, too, it's a wonderful presentation. After his negative performance in OSO, Arjun has brilliantly proved how matured an actor he is. With Prachi's performance, it looks like she has a future in Bollywood. The combination of visuals with dialogue looks really nice on the screen. Direction is really praiseworthy. After a long time, a film is made to touch all the generations. Hats off to Farhan and Abhishek Kapoor. |

The film is about four friends, Aditya, Joe, Rob and Kedar aka KD ("Killer Drummer") who start a rock band and struggle to make it big in the rock world. Two parallel plotlines follow them at different times during their lives. They are both woven together at strategic points, which lends the film its much-praised nostalgic quality. The first of the two centres on the four in their early twenties, when they are young, wild and carefree, and their main focuses in life are music and friendship. During this time, they create a band called 'Magik', and meet to practise regularly in an old basement. A competition is announced, specifically for Indian rock bands, to be organised by Channel V, where the winner will be offered a contract for an album and at least one music video. The band need money for new instruments and they earn it by playing old Hindi songs at random Dandiya parties, even though it kills them to do so. They enter the competition and win, though it eventually turns out be their downfall. They are forced to make a number of compromises while signing the contract, which creates some tension within the band. Joe feels the most slighted as his song is not included (making way for a remix of a random wedding song to capitalise on the upcoming "wedding season") and his girlfriend, Debbie (for whom he had written the song), an aspiring fashion designer, is refused the chance of being the band's stylist. Later, when the cameramen focus solely on Aditya during the filming of the music video, Joe confronts him, accusing him of trying to take over the band. Things get worse when the film director rudely intervenes, and Joe lashes out at both him and Aditya, before marching out of the studio with Debbie. Aditya, who had failed to notice anything much was amiss, is shocked and decides to leave as well. He packs his stuff, writes a note breaking up with his girlfriend, and leaves for Delhi. In this way, Magik disbands and its members, once the closest of friends, become estranged from each other. The second plotline follows the band members ten years later. Aditya is a high-powered executive in an investment banking firm. He is cold, impersonal and shuttered, and his wife Sakshi feels as though she doesn't know her husband at all. She plans a surprise birthday party for him and goes to buy him a watch. KD, who has joined his dad's jewellery business and who owns the shop, overhears Sakshi talking about Aditya, and wondering if its his old friend, asks her to mention him to Aditya. Aditya, who has not told Sakshi anything about his past, denies knowing anyone called KD. Sakshi waves off the incident until she finds a box hidden in the closet with the lyrics of a song, a guitar pick and candid pictures and videos of Magik. Seeing KD in them, she contacts him and asks him to invite the rest of the band to Aditya's birthday party. KD meets up with Rob, who makes a living composing jingles for advertisements. They go together to invite Joe, who is largely unemployed earning a buck or two performing at weddings where nobody pays attention to the music. He has an eight-year old son, and the family is largely supported by Debbie, whom he has married, and who runs his family's fish business. Debbie, who still holds a grudge against the band for what she perceives as their ill-treatment of Joe, sends them away and forbids Joe from staying in touch with them. At the party, Rob and KD plan a reunion at their old rehearsal hall, the basement, though Aditya, who wasn't too pleased seeing his friends again, is not too enthused. He confesses to Sakshi after the party that she should not have invited them. She retorts by telling him that all she wanted was to see him happy, especially now that they are having a child (Sakshi is pregnant). She leaves for her mother's house, saying that she cannot have a relationship anymore with a man who won't let her in. The next day, Aditya goes to Sakshi's friend, Devika, for advice. She tells him to stop running away from his past, so he decides to meet his ex-bandmates at the basement. Joe is also there. He shakes hands with Aditya, wishes him a belated birthday and the band's differences seem to have been resolved. They start practising regularly at Aditya's house. Learning about this, Sakshi also returns home. Soon, another contest hosted by Channel [V] is announced, and at Rob's insistence, they enter themselves. Debbie, who is adamant Joe get a regular job, arranges for him a guitar-playing job on a cruise liner, but the ship is to sail on the same day as the contest. When it is discovered that Rob has a brain tumour and his last wish is to perform with Magik one last time, Joe's choice becomes very difficult. Debbie insists that he go for the job, especially as their financial situation is so bad and they have a son to bring up. The contest is aired on the radio, and while Joe is in the taxi on the way to the airport with his family, he hears Magik play the song he wrote for Debbie so long ago, and dedicate it to him. He leaves the taxi and goes to the concert, reaching just as the song ends. On seeing him, the band immediately perform another song, which turns out to be their last together onstage. In a short epilogue, it is revealed that Sakshi gives birth to a baby boy, who is named Rob after their friend who died two months after their final performance. Devika, Sakshi's friend, gets into a relationship with KD, who starts a record company with Joe, which promotes new talent. Debbie pursues her dream of being a fashion designer. The band members and their families meet at least once a week. |

Thursday, September 11, 2008 Last Sunday night my wife and I went for a movie. After a long time. 2yrs I think. Rockon. Story about 4 guys and their reunion. 4 guys and their dream. Dream to be India's greatest Rock band. Nice movie. Later that night I could not sleep. I laid there in front of the TV and gazed at the screen watching the dumbest shows on TV till 3 AM. But I wasn't watching TV. I was thinking. Is Rockon really about 4 guys who want to make it as India's biggest Rock Band? If you think deeper into it, you will realise the movie is about passion. Passion to do what you want to do from the bottom of your heart. Joe and Rob were 2 guys who continued doing what they had passion for and were still upset (of course Rob has other reasons too). But they persisted with their passion. Sometimes you are so deep in passion, that you loose sight of your responsibilities. Responsibilities... parents, wife, kids, loans etc... How often does one get to do what they do passionately and still be successful? Take my uncle for instance. Great artist....lost somewhere chasing his dreams. Every artist probably feels that one day one of his paintings is going to be sold for crores of rupees and he is going to be a crorepati. Van Gogh never became one in his lifetime. And when he did, he was not alive to see it. So are passion and success opposite ends of a spectrum. Then I think of Sachin Tendulkar. He wanted to be a tennis player and then a cricket player and what a successful cricket player he became. He earns enough to fulfill his family’s dreams and does what he has passion for. But Sachin is not what I want to talk about. I wanted to see how many people around me do what they do out of passion are still happy. I didn’t have to look far. My mom was my answer. She has a passion for her scouts and guides thing.... Yeah that’s what I call it. Scouts and Guides "thing". Do you think Aditya's father enjoyed the thought that his son wants to be a Rock Star instead of doing MBA. Definitely not. He may have also said "Tumhara band shand...." But it’s all about chasing your passion. My mom still does that. She is infact the commissioner for Maharashtra State. No matter what we say she still does that. And its not because of Rockon that I say this, I realized this about 6 months back when we all were expecting mom to stay home but she insisted that she has to go to some camp with her guides group. Crazy. Yes Crazy. Passion and crazy go hand in hand. Remember Bob Marley or Steve Irwin (Feeding a croc while his daughter Bindi was in his other hand) . Even Kedar's (Killer Drummer) dad must have said Crazy. KD still went ahead with the band right. For passion. And then sometimes your passion takes a back seat and you end up joining your dad's jewellery buisiness or be an investment banker. As a college going kid I was crazy about impromptu outings. Going to Singhgad every second day. Bas bike nikaale aur chal diye. Or crazy about playing cricket. I played cricket for 25 hrs a day. Dont know how but we did. Then we started working and today I don’t meet any of my friends. But do I need friends to follow my passion. Is it so weak that I stopped doing these things. Rob and Joe did not stop. I ask myself, when was the last time I tried to beat the elevator while running up the stairs or when was the last time I teased people on the railway tracks while I stood in the entrance of the train compartment. Long time. Long Long time. Its the passion for some thing that enables you to become crazy and that it reflects in your life. Thats why Joe (who was still passionate about guitaring) dared to cover KD's eyes when KD was driving the jeep. And thats why Aditya (who had given up his passion) was so conservative when his pregnant wife stood up in the moving jeep. When will we learn to follow our passions. When I was in college I used to say "someday I will buy a car and then go out on a road trip and live off the road for an entire month". I bought a car..... for status.... not for passion, probably that’s why I never went on a road trip. Question is, can I let go my responsibilities and chase my passion. Joe did that and that’s why I say his was still passionate. Rob did that that’s why he was standing there and playing the keyboard when he was supposed to be resting. Can I....... Will I....... "The woods are lovely dark and deep But I have promises to keep And miles to go before I sleep And miles to go before I sleep ....Robert Frost " Who knows someday your passion for something may make you successful one day…. |

Music is life , music can pure your soul . India as a country has always produced great musicians who have made a name for them via their music internationally esp in the field of classical music . the sitar , dholak , sarangi have always inspired & awed generations of Indians . but somehow the guitar , drums have always been thought to be inspiration for the western people & so is the music associated with these instruments – Rock music . the real fact is a new generation in India has taken to rock music in the recent past & made it a viable option along with the Tradition folk & classical songs . the bands in Bengal comprise of a huge number of lovers of rock music as well as the famous band Euphoria . This neo reality is showcased by Abishek Kapoor in his film on Rock Music – Rock On . in an first of its kind attempt kapoor showcases the story of 4 friends Aditya ( Farhan in a surprisingly natural debut as an actor ) , Joe (the brilliant & restrained Arjun Rampal) , KD KillerDrummer(Purab an absolute natural & funny) , Rob (an effective Luke Kenny) who have a band called magik . they love rock music & dream to make it big in this field . finally , when they do get this chance to make it big as a band , egos start to tumble in & ends up separating them . their dreams are put to an end abruptly , they go their separate ways to lead mechanical lives some even throwing the music they loved out of their life . Years later Aditya s wife sakshi ( Prachi in one of the finest debuts of the yr) reunites them & reignites the passion of friendship & music that they had left behind . all 4 now see this as their last opportunity to redeem themselves by reuniting for a concert the one last time .but will the 4 come back again as a team & perform the one last time to pure their soul again . or will there be problems like Joes wife (the find of the film Sahana Goswami effortless & flawless) Who is hell bent on making te idealistic Joe practical by not allowing him to join the band again ? As far as the story is concerned there is nothing new as one as seen such kind of stories in many friendship movies like dil chahata hai , rang de basanti & many others , but what makes the difference here is rock music & the realistic treatment by kapoor . of course , the screenplay is another reason as it has some beautiful moments wich make u feel as if all this could have happened to u - the scene where prachi is asked tossing or when farhan welcomes her back home with the first magik song after her reunion . - the climax concert is bound to take u into a trance as it happened with all the people in the theatre were quite & hardly anyone moved , even the 5 yr old toddler though I do thing he was shocked on seeing grownup people shouting inte screen. There are many moments like these that make the movie . But the real star of the show has to be Editor deepa Bahtia & the genius of the musical trio of Shankar Ehsaan & loy . While Bhatia editing of the rock songs how she manages to kee the interest alive in the narrative while it consistently overlaps between the past & present , the trio of S.E.l create the right kind of music tht is bound to be appreciated everytime the movie is watched , each & every song is bound to make u fall in love with rock music u have been a fan of it or not . the Cinematograph y is brilliant considering that it only happens to be a 8- 12 crore film , the feel of the movie is grand & much bigger . At the end of it Rock On tells u to go back to a incomplete dream & try to fulfill it by giving urself a second chance . u never know the dream or ambition might just get fulfilled , so don’t stop dreaming & never think its too late , it might just happen like magik |
