New York is one of the bravest attempt coming from the Yashraj stable . Aditya Chopra has only been attributed as the story writer for the film & to be very fair the film does have a predictable story line .Well you cant blame him for lack of ideas as he is always hidden & reclusive to the world to watch it closely . The film talks about the Muslim point of view in U.S.A post 9/11 . How the most civilized world lost their humanity at the first sign of global danger i.e. Al Qaeeda . Now the Muslim Plight has been brilliantly showcased in the movies like the outstanding Aamir , But 9/11 & America’s reaction to it has not been depicted in Hindi cinema before . So inspite of having a predictable story , the setting is new . That’s exactly what works for New York . What also works for the film is the friendship track in the university . The track with wonderful song ‘Junoon’ playing in the background creates a sense of strong emotions for the characters especially for Neil’s character that lingers on even in the most dramatic scenes featuring Neil . In the same way the big twist though on expected lines works well because the torture scene preceding it has been shot extremely But thank God New York has been helmed by a Kabir Khan & not a Aditya Chopra or else we would have seen a 3 hr plus movie with loads of melodrama & songs .All these factors would have doomed the movie as it is of completely different genre in contrast to the Romantic epics that Aditya is known to make . Thankfully Kabir Khan comes from a raw & Real school of filmmaking , a facet that we saw in his extremely unique & quirky first attempt Kabul Express . Kabir Khan has a very simple style of story telling , no props , no unique camera angles , just let the story do the talking So none of the songs are lip -synched but are used as backgrounds to set the moods of the scenes , the pacing is fast & important scenes are superbly shot like the John Abraham’s big revelation scenes or the torture scenes . realistically . It also helps to give John’s character the meat that it required . Where Kabir Khan does well again is his choice of actor in the most important role of the film . Jus like his choosing of the brilliant Arshad Warsi in Kabul Express ,here too he goes for the superb Irfan Khan for the role of an FBI agent who creates the game which takes the story forward , Irfaan also has also has to mouth some very topical lines as regards to conveying the main message of the movie .Though in the hands of any other actor such lines could have gone into preachy territory , it is Irfaan’s natural talent that he makes all the lines real& restraint . Though Kabir is not a director who can be called as an expert in extracting great performances from all his actors , which explains the indifferent performances from the 3 leads which varies from brilliance to plain ordinary(the 9/11 scene & their reaction to it is one such example of such inconsistency , seriously the expressions there was quite wooden in sharp contrast to what should have been the case after seeing such a heinous event happening supposedly so close to them) . It was quite expected though as non of the actors are known to be performers & it is after all their 1st attempts at full fledged serious roles .So inspite of the fact that one cant call it a complete performance they still surprise you in many of the scenes . Look at John Abraham , in an effort that can be termed as a performance from him after a long time instead of his regular kind of roles where he has to show the audience his Abs ( sometimes more than that) &just look good , he shocks you in the second half especially the sophistication & ease he brings to his dreaded character .It is easily his best effort till date & his constant improvement & choice of intelligent subjects as a way to enhance his career shows that one day John will be counted as an actor & the wooden tag will be removed , a change that has happened with many other actors ( for Example a certain MR KHiladi) The same goes for Neil who has trappings of someone whom will evolve into a fine actor & inspite of the fact that he has got lots of scenes with Irfaan he comes out with flying colors expect for the few glitches here & there , it is a fine effort for somebody doing his third film . Katrina largely plays a supporting role to the 3 men , but surprises one as well in her first performance oriented role , yes she still has issues with dialogue delivery , but she has been aptly cast has the sunshine ( ever smiling) girl in the movie .A word for the actor who plays who is brilliant & a complete natural , I wonder why such talents are not highlighted by the media Having said all the nice deserved things about New York , there is one glitch which I want to covey & that is the glorification of the anti-social . For some reason at one point unintentionally I might add we start rooting for the anti-social rather than the law enforcers , which is a dangerous situation at times especially the message that the makers is trying to convey through this movie . It is quite dangerous in times like these when violence is prevalent in every corner of the society . http://pronefilmviews.blogspot.com/ |

Omar (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is detained for possessing arms and the investigating FBI officer Roshan (Irrfan Khan) wants him to prove his innocence by spying on his college friend Sam (John Abraham). Omar agrees to it believing in his friend's innocence only to be proved wrong. Omar had a crush on Maya (Katrina Kaif) during his college days but she is now married to Sam and they have a little kid. Omar wants to save Sam because of his friendship but will he be able to is what the rest of the movie is about. The torture scenes are pretty graphic. Irrfan Khan's response when Omar breaks his transmitter and his dialogue about putting a Jihad poster are the only scenes worth mentioning. The plot and the screenplay are full of gaping holes. Roshan tells Omar that the FBI would break any law and that they can detain anyone indefinitely but seem to be doing nothing with respect to Sam and his group even though they have all the evidence. Maya is a human rights activist who knows that her husband is a terrorist but chooses not to confront him hoping that he will just turn good one day.

"Bollywood is still a genre. It is unfair to call all Hindi films as Bollywood"-Abhay Deol It is refreshing to watch a Hindi movie that is topical and made with a degree of seriousness. 'New York' sputtered at the start but eventually turned out to be a thoughtful attempt at exploring the psychological impact of post 9/11 clamp-down on Muslims in the United States and also the perception of the country and its policies across the world. The usp of the film is that it makes you debate with it as the principal characters debate on the above lines. 'New York' centers around three friends who went to NY University together, but drift apart as two of them, Sameer and Maya fall in love and the jilted aspirant Omar is heartbroken. This is around the time of 9/11. Seven years hence, Omar is picked up by the FBI and is forced to infiltrate into a sleeper cell allegedly operated by Sameer, while befriending him again. The plot tries to find out whether Sameer is really a terrorist in the making and if so, is he justified in doing what he is doing and whether Omar can stop him. Kabir Khan has made a film that keeps you riveted with graphic portrayals of the forced detention of suspects and the torture they go through. The principal characters engage in meaningful dialogue with different points of view. There is balance in characterizations with the silent and intense Sameer (John Abraham), counterbalanced by the emotional and reactive Omar (Neil Nitin Mukesh) with the pivot being the loving and balanced Maya (Katrina Kaif). The fly on the wall is the cool yet calculative FBI agent (Irrfan Khan) who tries to lend a holistic perspective but does betray gratitude to the 'land of opportunity' that has given him, an immigrant, an opportunity to do what he does. It was heartening to see that Pritam's music and songs were used in the background without interrupting the story line. Irrfan Khan predictably towers over the cast with a wonderful blend of cool and intensity. He is 'the man'. Neil Nitin Mukesh does a good job of showcasing Omar's journey from being a wide eyed student to jilted lover to helpless infiltrator. John Abraham as Sam and Katrina Kaif as Maya do not score too many points in the acting department. Their roles could have been essayed by higher caliber actors. Their inability to step up makes the film lose a bit of balance despite the characters being well written. 'New York' does stay with you after you leave the hall. You do get the impression that an attempt has been made to explore both sides of the story, but it leaves you with the impression that the conclusions are in the favor of the Government, despite bringing to light the suffering of the innocent due to the policy. Based on what is shown, the conclusion does not seem well justified. The film could have been better served by concluding with a question, not an answer. |

the movie is pretty decent watch, its a story of 3 friends who have studied together, with the tinge of love triangle they separate from each other. now 7-8 years after that they are destined to meet, but its no co-incidence, its all planned and has the thrill factor in it. i wont go into details as it will be spoiling the story. it involves one friend trying to uncover the truth for himself and everyone else. some good things about movie 1. good performances by neil, john, katrina (dude, she acted this time!) and irrfaan. 2. decent music, not great but good, khwam-khaah, bevajah is pretty good. 3. good storyline though, i found the storyline not so convincing at times and conveniently assumed at others. especially the way things move so fast after the friends unite, end was reasonably filmy also. but still would recommend the movie for everyone. worth the money, its clean and can be watched with family :-). |

I enjoyed this film a lot, though I felt it was spoiled a little by the ending, which was in my opinion rather weak. It was thought provoking, in that I knew quite a number of people had been detained after 9/11, but I hadn't realised it was as many as 1200. Nor did I know how many of those were kept for long periods without any reason being given or charges made. It also made me wonder what I would do if I found myself in the position the main characters found themselves, which I guess was the main point of the film. The love triangle was handled well, (as you would expect from Bollywood :-) and the music was good, if a little long at times, and the three main actors were excellent. I wasn’t quite convinced by the way the main character’s reason for doing what he did was handled, but this may be a style thing more than anything. I also felt that the ending was a bit bland. Yes, life should go on, despite the horrors of 9/11, (or the bad guys win) but it just came across as being a bit weak after what was after all a film based on a very serious subject. Now, had the head of the FBI ‘extended the hand of friendship’ and thanked our hero for all the emotional stress he had just been put through over the previous couple of hours, that would have made for a stronger ending. Instead it came across as ‘Isn’t America the best?’ Well, actually, it does have its own problems, like recovering from 8 years of GWB in the White House. As someone who happened to be in Boston on 9/11, I still haven’t recovered from the crass manner in which that man acted. ‘We’re declaring war’ spouts George. OK. On anyone in particular, or just everyone who isn’t white and well off? It took him three days to realize that he might have been a little more diplomatic! Sorry, time I put away my soapbox! J This was a good film and well worth seeing in my opinion. |

hello, What I had to do to see this movie? As I reside in West Bengal..My friend Tanuj had planned for d movie.I had agreed to make his plan a successful one.On this 29th the show was at 1 pm.We all planned to leave early bt may be be it was our bad luck that it started raining like cats n dogs.My sister n friends had to miss first 15 mins of the movie as our Dad was not allowing us to leave..They made sure that we leave when the rain stops n the rain stopped at 12:45..We got the bus at 1 pm...There in the theatre one of our frn was waiting with the tickets.. My Dad didn't want us to leave home in dt heavy rain but it was Tanuj's Dad who finally permitted us n my supporting mother..Now at 1:30 when we reached n d movie hall we couldn't understand d head n tail of d movie..Later we had changed our places due to the sound problem.. Now if I have to talk about the movie then i would say I was literally feelin to leave the movie hall. The movie was dam boring..Only d son of Jon N Katrina was cute..Neil Nitin Mukesh didn't do justice with his role..N other movies Katrina looks hot but her she looked very pale..There was nothig gr8 about John..Ony fact u all will know by watching d movie s dt more then 1000 ppl were tortured for suspect n bombing of world trade centre.Even the same happened with JOn..N neil was also working as anti terrorist officer... There was seriousy no need of killing Katrina...but to talk sth good abt d movie is dt d song s gud "yaaron ji bharke jilo pal"..it's awesome n it reminds of remaking a cool video wit my hostel frns.. If u all can trust me pls dn't watch dis movie but u really want to go den for tym pass pls do buy popcrn, chips, nachos, burger n coke watever u lyk den atleast u cn sy u njoyed.... I hope u liked my review.Pls feel free to write ur comments.. |

This is true for the movie, for Aditya Chopra and for Kabir Kahn. The subject of the movie is very contemporary and reflects the scenario of America post 9-11 and Australia 2009.The actors were cast judiciously. The panoramic view of New York is colorful, yet dark and unfriendly. Editing is slick and Music is very graceful, always in background. Yet the gut wrenching feel that should come with such a volatile subject, never arrive. The movie is about a paradise called New York where on golden leafy campus a red-tint-haired lass introduces herself to a newcomer with pressed shirt tucked in Terry cot pants. The hero is almost a narcissist, all brown and brawny with no dialogues at all for atleast an hour. The movie proceeds with twists. The first was when FBI poster boy Irfan Kahn declares John as a Terrorist suspect and second when Katrina declares her love for John leaving Neil high and dry but with very very moist eyes. That was an end of innocence. In other time and place but in different world which is too vulnerable post -11 , Neil was sent as a jasoos to stop and report John doing any unlawful activity. The movie travels with twist in every corner. The torture of John as a suspect post 9-11 is inspired from the real life situations of Iraqi detainees. It definitely generates the feeling of despair and helplessness and one wonders where Human Right activists are. The movie fall flats, I guess due to its lack of sinisterism. The characters are mere caricature except Neil’s. John was the most hallowed one. The first few happy minutes of their friendship is covered in visuals supported by background music. The Chuhalbaazi and banter , which one expects in such scenes were not there. Some scenes were brilliant like the one where John asks Neil to shoot a terrorist. Khair jaane do, the movie is surely onetimewatchbale. P. S : Kabir and Aditya are going to do some intro and retrospect , I guess. |
