WANTEDA Screenplay writer for director Soham Shah who could double up as a dialogue writer. The writer should be able to give shape to Soham’s unique ideas as well create interesting characters for it . He should also be able to write realistic lines which should take away from the boredom of heavy duty lines as felt by the tortured audience of Luck .
CONFUSED IDEOLOGY This was the first think that came into my mind as I was watching Soham Shah’s Luck . Soham Shah is someone who has great eye for visuals as his scenes are extremely well shot . He also has unique ideas too . But this is where he gets stuck at , he doesn’t know where to go from here , How to make the idea into a viable 2 & half hour movie .. The film opens well with a superb train sequence which introduces Sanjay Dutt’s character Moussa ( ya I know he had the same name in Gupta’s movies , infact Shah seems to have been heavily inspired by Gupta’s school of cinema which prefers style rather than substance ) . Post this excellent sequence & Moussa’s introduction, the movie goes on a downhill . Too much time is spent on introduction of the other charcters & none of them are interesting enough to hold the audiences attention thanks to inept writing & kiddy dialogues which takes the audience for a ride Add to that are the many loopholes in the screenplay .Sample this Ravi Kisshen is a dreaded criminal who is sentenced death penalty . But is released by the authorities when he is lucky to escape the hanging as the hanging rope slips away . Now How cool is this , which judiciary does so , release a criminal who has killed many people because he is lucky . The film has many more such childish piece of writing . I felt things might change once the real action of human betting starts . Now a theme of human betting is unique & Shah could have used it to a more darker & grim end . What he ends up doing with it is giving it a more 80’s action kind of structure where there is a hero , side characters & a villain . There are even old Hindi Cinema formulaic elements of revenge , twins etc used in the script .Add to that , is the shoddy climax( Shah had done the same in Kaal with the climax , a clear writing deficiency) which is the lowest piece of writing that one has seen in this movie so far ,where Imraan challenges Sanjay . It takes the movie to a new low & shows Soham didn’t know where to go , whether to follow the sophistication of multiplexes audience or go for the single screen which loves the 80s kind of treatment . In short , he didn’t know where to head as far as screenplay writing is concerned .So he decided to mix both the elements to make a kichdi , a not so tasty one I might add . Soham Shah should have either gone for a kickass action fun movie or a grim one . He follows both & falls badly Shah is not the first one to fall into that trap , remember Tashan which had a great first half but ended up making a bad second half in order to please everyone. We all know what happened with Tashan . It is indeed surprising at a time when unique & well written movies like Aamir , A Wednesday has done extremely well earning money as well as praise from the critics, Shah decides to go back revisiting the 80’s perhaps the worst time of Hindi cinema as far as writing was concerned with the exception of a few .
BORING DIALOGUES ‘mai khareedhta nahi , sirf bhare mai leta hoo’ ‘mujhe paiso ki nahi sirf tujh jaiso ki zaroorat hai’ ‘biz dino k liye tu mujhe apna luck bare pe dede’ ‘laxmi tika lagani aayi hai aur tu eid ka chand bana hua hai’ These are one of the many filmy lines that you get to hear in this movie . In fact it stays in the movie throughout with every character speaking the same language so much so that beyond appoint it starts to irritate you . What is also there is an entire Soham Dictionary on luck as a concept with the same 80’s style of writing .It was almost as if Mr Shah is writing a thesis on Luck & wants to acquire a doctorate on the subject . Well , I have to say that I had no choice but to call him Dr Soham Shah after the irritation the Dialogues had caused to me hoping I could escape the headaches such lines were giving me . But alas , the lines kept on coming as if he was enjoying the torture that he was giving to the audiences . A word of advice would be to take admission in the Imtiaz Ali school of dialogue writing whose refreshing & relatable lines can take even a water-thin plot to a new level . So go & Watch Jab We Met Mr Shah & be the first to catch Love AAj Kal as well . You need it boss .
CONFUSED ACTING reat performances are the key to a thriller’s success . Sometimes the caliber of the actor takes even an average thriller to a new level . Examples of this fact are movies like Khakhee ( AB, Akshay Ajay , Atul ) , Dus ( Sanjay , AB Jr , Pankaj Kapur ) , Gulaal (the entire cast) . These films show that good acting is a key to a thriller’s success . But in the case of Luck , Confused scripts lead to confused acting . Shah doesn’t seem to be a guy who has great control over his actor’s performances . So you get to see a disinterested Sanjay Dutt who looks like he was mouthing the dialogues in sleep . You could see his eyes not emoting at all , just mouthing the lines with a need to go home quicky attitude . Now this is the 2nd time in a row after Kidnap we have seen him like these . If you are not interested , don’t do the movie , why waste so much money for bad acting . Poor Soham might not have the guts to tell him so after his first movie in Kaal hasn’t worked , he needed a good actor .Mr Dutt seems to be more interested in the elections rather than acting . I hope this is not the case as it will be a pain to see a good actor like him waste his talent for political gains Add to this is Imran who gives strange expressions ,trying too hard to look tough . In fact his expressions remind you of the PSII game boys characters mechanical expressions . Imran still has a long way to prove himself as an actor & that Jaane tu…. wasn’t an effort due to Abbas Tryewalla’s brilliance . Shruti who looks scorching hot in this movie until she opens her mouth to say some dialogues , she is a superb singer though . Mithun‘s character is the most underwritten yet he is okay , Danny is good , but he is the saddled with most of all those filmy lines , so you get irritated after a while thinking – ‘Now what the hell is he going to say’ . The only 2 people who are decent here besides Danny is Ravi Kishen & Chitrashi Rawat . Rawat’s character is the only one after a while who gets to you emotionally as far as Kishen is concerned , there are times he hams . But considering what he plays in the movie , it goes with the character .
HINDI CINEMA’S FINEST SPECIAL EFFECT SCENES Luck has great action sequences – full marks to Allan Amin & the VFx team . The parachute scenes is quite superb as well as the under water sequence . The train sequence is the best of the lot . Unfortunately Soham keeps the action choreography to a limit & focuses on the story which is the most boring part of the movie . He should have filled the movie with action . One of the factor that do make the action scenes even more enjoyable are the invisible Vfx or special effect . This Soham Shah movie can at least be proud of one thing that it has the best special effects ever produced in India so far . Look at the under water shark scenes as well as parachute scenes to see the effect of invisible Vfx . I call it invisible because it is indeed hard to decipher that these are Vfx scene . Can’t say the same about the climax though where the standard Of Vfx goes down suddenly after pinnacle heights achieved in the initial action scenes. But Shah should be credited to bring the novelty & realism that we have not seen in Hindi Cinema Vfx or special effects so far
It is well aided by Santosh Thundiyil’s cinematography capturing the beautiful visuals & action scenes beautifully especially the under water ones . Soham Shah is not a bad filmmaker ,he has great ideas , good technical expertise , his only problems are writing & performances . Now does that make him a good filmmaker , I don’t think so too . Oh I m confused , must be the effect of confusion after watching The Unluck oops sorry LUCK . |

Read full review at my blog : CLICK HERE. But actually, really, honestly speaking- I liked the movie. Yes, Yes, i liked it. Okay, I am not being 'different' from all, or I am not being 'attention-seeker' but seriously, I liked it as a clean fun time pass. Remember Aa Dekhen Zara? People rejected it at once, but I loved it :) So, that's just me. Okay, movie has its own flaws. A part [20 min approx] after intermission, was boring when game after a game was coming, so it became like Fear Factor episode, but soon it got back on track. But again in climax, Ravi Kissen lost the track. Otherwise, everything is smooth.
Chitrashi Rawat - the Chak De girl, caught all the attention. She was really fabulous, that I wasn't looking at Shruti at all, whenever both are on screen. Shruti was looking confused, nervous, depressed, whatever. But still, i want to see her in a full fledged role, that would be fine. Imran Khan, well, he hardly has his 'own' part in this movie. Either he is driven by Danny Denzongpa [Mind Blowing !!] or he looked lost somewhere. But still, there were sparks. And after watching this, I would definitely go for Kidnap. |

‘Luck’ is a triumph of style over substance, inanity over intelligence and weak jabs over powerful punch lines. Based on a concept with potential, the film could have done with better execution and ends up as a disappointment. The film is about a betting syndicate that wagers money on people who are considered to be lucky. These chosen few are put through life threatening games of chance where their ability to fall on the right side of probability is tested. These are people with needs that can only be satisfied with money. The syndicate’s boss Moosa Bhai and henchman Tamang look for such people bring them together. So, we have a son who needs to repay his late father’s debt, an army officer who needs to raise funds for his wife’s treatment, a girl who wants to avenge her twin sister’s death allegedly because of Moosa, a camel rider who can win any camel race with a lame camel and a serial killer who survived a hanging and was (hold your breath) released because the mechanism failed while hanging. A motley crew indeed. The basic plot of the film is interesting as it involves gambling on a person’s luck. But, the film suffers badly due to poor execution. Soham Shah’s direction is high on style with helicopters criss-crossing, exotic locales and well thought out action sequences, but he is unable to tie all the loose ends of the story together. The quality of editing is poor as could be seen in the first and last action sequence. These sequences should have left the viewer gasping, but end up a couple of notches lower because the tension is not built up well. You could use Aamir Khan’s train charging sequence in ‘Ghulam’ for a benchmark. The music, apart from the title song ‘Aaazma Luck’ fails to evoke. The actors are handicapped by poor dialogue. One can understand that the characters are battling for their life and they have bragging rights about their luck and they can afford to be philosophical. But the dialogues are so weak and amateurish. Check this out ‘Lakshmi tum pe teeka lagane aaye hai aur tum eid ka chand bane ho’. ‘Kamra kareeb hone se insaan kareeb nahi ho ja ta’ Good Lord! Sanjay Dutt as Moosa sleep walks through his role. He can be titled ‘chopper man’ because his entry and exit is mostly via helicopter. Danny Denzongpa as Tamang can be a good model for Ray Ban Aviators but does precious little apart from giving the camera a blank stare. Imran Khan does show traces of sensitivity as his character battles the moral difficulty of his decision to play the game. But the material is not strong enough to help him. Mithun Chakraborty is not given enough to do with his immense talent. Shruti Hassan is passable as eye candy but needs diction classes and acting classes going forward. Ravi Kishan as the serial killer Raghav does appear insane. So, one can give him credit for playing the part. ‘Luck’ could have been a better film if more effort had been invested in dialogue and post-production, especially editing. You can try to leave your brain behind, but you might end up missing it soon. Avoidable unless you are a fan of any of the main actors. |

Luck borrows its plot from 13 Tzameti and other B-grade Hollywood movies to churn out a bad 80s movie replete it with filmy dialogues. Moussa (Sanjay Dutt) runs a betting racket where the players have to bump off each other to win the prize money. Ram Mehra (Imran Khan), and the other contestants are in it due to various financial and personal reasons. The only scenes in the movie that are any good are the one where Chitrashi Rawat talks about her dreams and the one where Mithun and Imran have a talk as to why Imran is there. The screenplay is horrible and what could have been an adrenaline pumping thriller ends up looking like a B-grade movie. A serial killer is let off because the rope breaks and there is a double role when there is no need. Read the rest of the review at http://tanqeed.com/movies/luck.cfm |

Indian Cinema has unarguably proved its mastery over the genre of drama and comedy in the past decades. But if we look upon the thrillers made in our part of the world, then there is still lot to achieve as per the International Standards. “Luck” also falls in the same category of thriller movies based on weak scripts relying heavily on its huge star-cast and exciting action sequences. In fact, here we have a movie, made only on an idea of human life being used in the betting mafia and has no basic script heading towards any particular event.
The movie starts off excitingly, introducing Sanjay Dutt as the Don of betting trade participating in a dangerous death race himself. And then the background narration (by Danny) unfolds the entire star-cast with their different individual sequences. Actually, these all are the needy people, chosen to play the dangerous life taking games arranged by the betting Don. But surprisingly this introduction chain exceeds its desired limits and continues till we reach the Intermission. In short the first half is only about the Introductions and has nothing in terms of story or content.
So, all expectations are set for an engrossing second half, showcasing a grand thrilling event and a great exciting climax. But sadly nothing goes as expected and we are only made to witness some unexplained and uninteresting sequences leading to nowhere. Usually in a script where few characters are brought together for a purpose, everything moves towards a specific event or a plan which has a great excitement value. But in “Luck”, there is neither any striking spectacular event nor a crescendo kind of impact, building towards it climax. The writers are only interested in talking about the idea of betting mafia playing games involving human lives and that’s it.
The movie is entirely based on a groundless script giving no opportunities to any artist in particular to prove his art. In fact, one wonders why veteran artists like Sanjay Dutt and Danny opted for this movie with no great roles written for them. Sanjay, though looks great as the Don, has got nothing to deliver other than the usual Bhai stuff. Danny is simply, mis-cast as the Sutradhar or the person responsible for getting every player together.
Imran, with a great fan following should be more careful in choosing his projects as this will be his second movie in a row, which fails to impress. Shruti Hassan, who comes just before the intermission, has got great screen presence, but should work on her dialogue delivery as she sounds uncomfortable speaking her Hindi lines. And there was really no need of her Bikini act in the movie as “the script never demanded it”. Mithun Da is completely wasted. He unconvincingly uses his famous dialogue “Koi Shaque” from “Ghulami”, which simply fails to generate the similar impact as in the original. Above all, both Ravi Kishan and Chitrashi are able to impress the most with their splendid performances.
Among the songs added for some glamour value, only “Aazma Luck” impresses to some extent. Background score on the other hand serves the purpose perfectly. Cinematography brilliantly captures the well directed action sequences both in the air and below the water. But their brilliance goes in vain, in absence of a good storyline and captivating writing.
So, for thrillers fans, the movie may be below their expectations, with no great excitement or special unique points to mention here. And if you are a real movie buff then you surely must have seen many better flicks in the same genre before. Ratings : 1 / 5 |

‘Luck’ is an action thriller with a moderately interesting script and some good stunts. The viewer’s interest doesn’t flag too much till the end. However, the dependence on destiny beams out a confused and rather skewed message.
The story is set in the betting world of India and South Africa. A lot of money is invested on players who are fortunate enough to survive incredible feats. Musa (Sanjay Dutt) seems to be some kind of don in this world, who handpicks lucky as well as needy contestants. He thus brings Ram (Imran Khan), Ayesha (Shruti Haasan), Colonel Veer Pratap Singh (Mithun Chakraborty), and a few others to South Africa, and pits them against each other in gambling contests. They all go through some life-threatening stunts, and finally, the main characters survive and win good pickings.
The action thriller is held together by Soham Shah’s script and some clever direction. It manages to push the movie a few notches above average. The scenes do not straggle or fall out of line with the main story. The screenplay is well handled, with some stunt scenes that are rivetting. The background music is appropriate, with one soft and soothing song.
Imran Khan does a competent job as a deadbeat youth who has to collect Rs 20 crore to pay off his father’s debts. Shruti Haasan doesn’t have much to do except to look good. She needs to improve her acting ability as well as her dialogue delivery. Sanjay Dutt, Govinda and Danny Denzongappa are okay.
The best performance, however, is given by Chitrashi Raavat, who plays a Pakistani teenager. She is spunky and impactful in a role that stays with you.
‘Luck’ is bound to be a hit with the young crowd, unless it’s unlucky. However, do not absorb its message of destiny.

Movie : Luck : Run Time : 133 minutes. After Long Time I Am Writing A Review I Have Seen The Movies Yesterday With A Great Expectation But Was Dissapointed The Way Movie Turn Out. Soham Shah Direction Is Half Baked Category. Movie Starts With Danny Telling About Us Luck And Introduce About Sanjay & Imran Luck Factor. Sanju Is Playing Moosa Bhaai as a betting king of human lives the scene were he is running and crossing the train line blind folded is incredible. Imran Plays Ram a bank employee in knee deep debt from his father and he wants to clear it but he don't have enough money, so he wants to go to america to make 1 ka 40. But his visa is rejected 3 times. And he is frusted about it. Danny plays Tamaang and he works for Moosa Bhaai to find people whos luck factor is very strong. His job is to rent people luck and play dangerous game. Mithun plays Retired Major Jaabbar Singh it was very nice to see mithun after long time, he also need money for his wife Rati Agnihotri as she is suffering from serious illness and to cure it he needs big amount of money. Chitrashi Raavat plays a Pakistani teenager Shortcut as a camel race rider, she has a good role. Ravi Kishan plays A Serial Ring Killer and he is in jail waiting to be hanged but, He Is Very Lucky When He Was Being Hanged the rope breaks up and he couldn't be hanged as law does not allow a person to be hanged twice so he is freed by the court. Shrutti Haasan comes just before interval were all this people are brought in to play with their luck towards deadly games. She has a long way to go thoug she looks good but her dialouge delievery is not up to mark, she could not show her much skill as of big star cast. Action Scene are incredibles Such As Jumping From Helicopter, Undewater Shark Scene I Feel Pitty For Poor Shortcut when shark bits her leg apart. Train scene is good looks like a video game scene. Perfomance Wise : Sanjay Dutt & Danny are the real life line of the movie. With Equally good perfomance from Mithun, Ravi Kishan & Chitrashi. Imran & Shrutti are poor in this film in terms of acting they both failed to impress againts sanjay, danny & mithun. Soham Shah script is not filled properly, still not so bad movie can be seen once for Sanjay incredible perfomance with Danny & Mithun. |
