Just saw Homam movie. Excellent direction by J.D. Chakravarthy. Jagapathi Babu acting is superb. The performances in "HOMAM" are all pitch perfect. The movie is based on Leonardo DiCaprio's The Departed english movie. It doesn't really matter because J.D. takes the material and makes it his own. HOMAM is going to get some unfair comparisons with "The Departed". I never like to do that. Both pieces of work exist within their own world. They are seperate from each other.
Jagapathi Babu plays Mallik, who comes from a poor working class family that his father on the wrong side of the law (depending which side of the law you're on). He has managed though to work his way up and become a cop.
J.D. plays Chandu, who appears to be the exact opposite. Chandu's father dies in police encounter. Chandu assists the "Daddy" the villian. Daddy manages to appoint chandu in police academy. Just to get information from police department.
J.D. Chakravarthy and Jagapathi Babu never share a great amount of screentime together in "HOMAM" but their impact on each other is apparent throughout the entire film. Jagapathi Babu is told by one of his superior officers Vishwanath (Pradeep Rawat) that because of his background he is not really "police material". Vishwanath flat out tells him you will never make it as a cop. However, Vishwanath tells him that Mallik has a special assignment for him. He wants Mallik to go undercover and get into Daddy's inner circle where the Police have been trying to arrest him for years.
HOMAM soon takes on childhood loyalty. Chandu back in his youth, became very friendly with Daddy and now as a cop has turned into a crooker officer. How will the police ever catch Chandu (The Bad police)? Watch on the screen!
It is a powerful, well made gangster film that is about more than violence. As I said it is about loyalty and who we choose to give that loyalty to. This is one of the best films.
Bottom-line: One of the best films. J.D. makes this remake a work of his own.
Finally, we are wating for the second part "MAARANA HOMAM"
Good Luck...J.D.
