Chak De - Decent Movie - Could have been a fantastic one!

Chak De India - lacks the PUNCH. But a decent watch.

Bouquets : Good storyline, good screenplay, good film overall. pretty decent watch.
Brickbats? well....
This movie could have been a fantastic one - instead of just a decent one! It lacked the PUNCH.
The surprise elements were missing. Everything was quite obvious. The match between girls and boys team, and the commendable integrity with letting the girls loose was appreciative. Other than that, it was just Obvious.

The actors did a terrific Job though. Including Mr. Shahrukh Khan. His performance in this film reminded me of his excellence as an actor - which to my mind was fading after his initial Darr, raju ban gaya gentleman, etc. days.

One of the few things that I would change in the story line:
I would let the team India loose the final match against Australia. I would have let it take the second place. And keep the hopes high for the next world cup.
Reasons:
1. The team that has never played world cup wins the world cup against 6 times former champions - , now c'mon people - how bollywoodish is that!
2. The spirit of yet to win...remains lingering a lot longer. It did not leave the after effect. The film could have been a lot more memorable - (a la Rang de basanti). India is not a winner yet. India CAN be.

Another thing which I would have liked - is for the screen play to accommodate some nitty gritties of Hockey.

So Indians know all about Cricket. All terminologies. All great players. This film could have delved a little more into the history, the great personalities, the excitement that goes into hockey. It missed that crucial element - which leaves me a little hungry of authenticity.

Lastly, but most Importantly - I would have handled one subject rather than addressing so many of them.
This film spoke about the following subjects to me:

State of Indian Muslim: An Indian Muslim player when missed a goal against Pakistan - he's termed as traitor.

Hockey Vs Cricket

Girls Professional sports Vs. Boys Professional Sports

That's too many to handle. And thus the attention kept shifting. I would say that the screenplay had room for improvement in this respect.

And I think, I Think, the title song - could have been Oh so much punchier. It almost seemed sad!

Otherwise, the memorable aspects of the Film:
Unity in diversity: girls from different states, backgrounds coming together - a true India.
A convincing portrayal of the condition of sports authorities in the country.
The charming part of the girls & boys match, the restaurant fight, the clash among the players, the killing training session (Awesome - short yet effective).

So that's my two bits. Take note. Or not. :)

An excellent movie, emphasising the 'unity in diversity' and 'united we stand and divided we fall' ..i.e all the cliche holding true here.

it is about the discrimination on several planes such as religion ,gender, region and so forth.the coach with a tainted name and girls with their own baggages and agendas get together to catch their dream that is world cup.

the name of the game is 'niyat'.beautifully said by srk" Team banane ke liye takat nahi neeyat chaaiye".

So true .

hip hip hurray to good intentions and all the under dogs.

CHAKDE India is a movie which makes anybody to get crazy about sport is a first thing.

Secondly the movie has got a strong message to learn for all the players who are representing India in international games that how the game is played when it has got Unity.

Winning is always a habit, so as loosing.........But here winning is to make the country proud and stand brighter among other countries.

All the characters are beautifully characterized with egos.......in the beginning. As the reality in our country is the same every state fighting for some or the other reason. This is what the movie had to say........If the country is united every thing is possible in the world....

CHAKDE India!!!!!!

Delighted to finally see a movie on Indian sport after Lagaan. Overall a very well made n...a crisp movie with a perfect & stunning cast! Such an inspirational story for ever sportsperson... I loved every character in the movie...a thumbz up for sure!!  Being a sportswoman myself & representing the country in a team sport, I could so very well relate to every scene that seemed like straight out of my journal. For those of you who have no acquaintance with the sporting world, Chak De gives you a tour into this least treaded path!!At the theater, I could hardly believe the reaction of the audience...if only that happened in the stadium instead :o)!!

This movie is surely entering into my personal DVD collection...as i secretly hope that somewhere there is a kabir Khan who shall believe in his/her team...thus raising a squad to a world class performance in the real sporting arena.

Certainly, a breath of fresh air.....Bollywood!! :o)

Excellent Movie. Excelllent Story. & Excellent starcast.

In fact there is only one star that's SRK. But others have become stars now, as they are not less than SRK.

Movie doesn't miss the track from start to end.

Every Indian should watch the movie & Specially, every woman should watch it. This movie is the lesson for all the people who think men are superior & women are inferior.

This is a great movie after a long time from the Yash Chopra camp, after a long time SRK has again acted as Shahrukh Khan and not as King Khan. This was the case with swades as well. The film touches a lot of aspects.... Hckey vs Cricket..... Women's Liberation.... eve teasing......Team Spirit... patriotism.

The film is released on 10th of august ... the independence day fever is on this epitome this week. The movie is grasping and the viewer doesnt get bored, even the girls in the team acted very well. I personally liked:

1) Komal Chautala (her acting and Dialogue delivery)

2) Preeti Sabharwal (looks gorgeous)

3) Vidya Sharma (good acting and good looking as well)

4) Bindiya Naik (good acting)

over all a must see....

Chak De India is about sportsmanship, and the fight/ of the ex hockey captain Kabir Khan (SRK) to avenge the disgrace of lost final match in the world cup.  Kabir fails to score in the penalty, and  india looses against pakistan and he is branded as traitor .. Kabir comes back after 7 years as the coach of the indian women's hockey team. What follows is fight of kabir and 16 players to win  the world cup.

Movie is light, and has some good comical moments. The 16 girls are from different parts of india and of course all of them their own idosyncrasies. Also there is fair bit of inspirational segments - the coming back of kabir, and the coaching of the girls by kabir .. good ..

acting is good . SRK has acted little better than okayish.  Noone of the new girls was bad...

Its a great family watch ...

the movie is pretty good, good performances by everyone, largely about team spirit, and a man's fight to get back his dignity and off course hockey :-)...

kabir khan (srk) had the worst nightmare of life when he missed the penalty shot against pakistan team in world cup finals of hockey, he was declared traitor and media just took his life from him... he leaves hockey and his home... now after 7 years of exile he is back and wants to be coach of women's hockey team, his dream is to get the world cup in women's hockey... he gets his team of 16 members who have come from different states and he has to train them for the tournament... these 16 characters are different so that gives a chance for entertainment... he firstly tries to get team spirit in all of them... after some initial resistance he manages to get the team going... then the story is about how the team does in the world cup...

overall a pretty good watch, srk has done justice to the role, most of the girls are new and they have done well, though I think the focus was on 4 of them only... not a lot of songs but music is good... good direction, director has kept the movie light and entertaining... though being a bollywood movie it has its own cliches... the movie in spirit is similar to apne also, with a sports kind of background, but apne had more scope to be emotional since family was involved, here that becomes the team spirit...

must watch from my side, with repeat value also, so I think will go for it again :-)

First things first kudos to yashraj films for having the courage to take up a script like this. Without doubt script is the mainstay of this movie.
Casting director deserves a standing ovation for resisting the temptation to cast famous faces as players. It is really heartening to see that all
the hockey players look real. Shahrukh, Only an actor of his stature could have provided the much needed star value to a film like this, lest scripts
like this run the danger of going unnotioced.
The story is inspired from a real life one. Mr. negi who 25 years back happened to be the goalkeeper of indian national hockey team which lost 1-7 to pakistan
Then he is labelled a traitor on grounds of accepting bribe from the rival team. Shahrukh plays the disgraced player, who missed a penalty stroke in finals
of world cup. Later he dons the mantle of coach of indian women's hockey team. Where he has to build a 'team'from scratch as they are 16 devils up
in arms against him plagued by regionalismand personal rivalry.
Now shahrukh khan of late has generally been playing himself onscreen. Here is one movie where where he is kabir khan the coach and not king khan.
He remains the character through out th movie. One could remember only of swadesh in recent times where he achieved a similar feat. It is an achievement
of sorts for him, as people are used to watching king khan onscreen and love him for that. Here the actor in him again resurfaces and comes out
with flyig colours. My personal favourite being the last scene where after winning the cup he succumbs to emotions and cries.
Other actors i.e. all of the team pitch in perfectly. Particularly the gals who played bindiya naik, preeti , komal and vidya . They have managed to hold
their own against a star like shahrukh.
Some of the dialouges are really good. Qiute a lot of them have been writtenkeeping in mind the gallery. Playing to the gallery at times is not that bad an idea
but the speech shahrukh gives before the final match could have been edited. Cinematogarphy is upto the mark, editing has been done quite nicely.
All the matches that are played have been scissored properly and hence are quite engrossing. music is soothing.
About the director, shimit amin has come up with a brilliant effort. Ab tak chchappan and now chak de india this guy is endowed with genuine talent. The
kind of sensitive treatment this kind of script required has been dealt with in an adequte manner. This new brigade of film makers have the guts to take
up scripts and implement ideas which generally the formula guys would safely wash their hands off with.
All in all this is a must watch. It is been quite some time since one came across such a genuine effort. Go for it.
