Music Directors of the Millennium...

Music Directors of the Millennium...LAXMIKANT-PYARELAL
When it comes to films, I feel that a particular movie is remembered for its songs. So much has been talked about the actor of the millennium, actress of the millennium but there has been no mention about the music directors of the millennium. My finger points at Laxmikant Pyarelal who have dominated film music since 1963-Parasmani down to 1998-Diwana Mastana. The duo has given some remarkable music and maintained consistency for 37 years, which is a feat in itself.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal have bagged as many as Seven filmfare awards ( including 4 times im a row..in the year 1977,1978,1979 & 1980) but they were capable of many more. Films like Sati Savitri, Sant Gyaneshwar, Aaye Din Baharke, Farz, Aaya Sawan Jhoomke, Mere Humdum Mere Dost, Do Raaste, Khilona, Intequam, Shor, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Bobby, Daag, Roti Kapda aur Makaan, Aasha, Main Tulsi Tere Angan Ki, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Eeshwar, Utsav, Tejab, Sursangam, Khuda Gawah, Khalnayak etc deserved to win best music award, which they missed narrowly. There was hardly any year in which they were not nominated for the best music directors award.

The duo had a variety in their music whether it was classical, folk, westernised, disco, bhajan or mujraa. Most of the songs composed by them were simple, catchy, melodious and was liked by both masses and classes. Songs composed by the duo are so popular even today that they are rendered in marriages and functions by changing a few words here and there.

Laxmi-Pyare's music had a magic to the extent that even non-star cast films like Dosti, Sant Gyaneshwar, Lutera, Wapas, Farz, Bobby, Jal Bin Machli.., Ek Duje Ke Liye, Hero, Sur Sangam, Saudagar, etc.and many more became successful because of the good music. The duo, moreover, worked with many top notch producers like V. Shantaram, Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Yash Chopra, Raj Khosla, Manmohan Desai, K Vishwanath, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Yash Johar, J. Om Prakash, Prasad Productions, Rajshri Films, Ramanand Sagar, Subhash Ghai, Shekhar Kapoor, Girish Karnad, Ramanand Sagar and David Dhawan and many more...

Though it is not easy to maintain consistency in this field,L-P were able to maintain the same for 37 years at a stretch. For this, no mere achievement, they could be named as the music directors of the millennium.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal has given the music for about 493 films. They have served the Indian Film Music from 1963 to 1998.

Re: Music Directors of the Millennium...

LP is a great pair, but if we say Music Directors of the millenium then the first name has to be Pancham (RD Burman) the list is incomplete without him.

Re: Music Directors of the Millennium...

Shantanu !!

Well !! Let me explain once again..the basis I have taken...

1) Laxmikant-Pyarelal's consistancy.

They have been very active , till the death of Laxmikant,  for 37 years (1963 - till end of century)and composed music for some 500 films. Their talent actually lay in the ability to compose memorable numbers throughout their career at a stupendous pace.

2) Super Hit Music for the Non Star Cast and B grade films.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal's music used become immensely popular even for the Non-Starcast films...Just to name few..."Parasmani", "Dosti", "Mr. X In Bombay", "Sant Gyaneshwar", "Lootera"..."Farz", "Bobby", "Ek Duje Ke Liye", "Hero"...and so many other films....All these above film became super hit because of it's music....Laxmikant-Pyarelal's music was a crowed puller...

3) Produced some OUTSTANDING MUSIC without the use of Kishore Kumar or Mohammad Rafi...

Laxmikant-Pyarelal have produced some "REAL GEMS"..even without the help of the major male singers Kishore Kumar or Mohammad Rafi...Just to give examples..."Milan"."Anita", "Shor", "Roti Kapada Aur Makan", "Bobby", "Ek Duje Ke Liye", "Hero"...down to "Utsav", "Sur Sangam"....and many more...

4) Un-Biased and Balanced in terms of Singer selection.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal were unbiased in singer selections...the records shows that LP has used Lata Manageshkar ( 700 songs), Kishore Kumar ( 399 songs) , Mohammad Rafi ( 370 songs), Ashha Bhonsle ( 250 songs), Mukesh ( 80 songs), Mahendra Kapoor, Hemant Kumar, Talat Mehamood, Pradeep etc......They have also utilised Suresh Wadekar, Manhar Udhas, Pankaj Udhas, Sudesh Bhonsle, Kumar Shanu, Sonu Nigham, Kavitha Krishnmurthy, Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam, Sukhwinder Singh, Udit Narayan, Alisha Chinoy,,,and many more,,,

5) Binaca Geet Mala Record..

Binaca Geet Mala used to be unbiased programme in terms of Popularity of the songs...refer this link for the further details..http://www.orkut.com/CommMsgs.aspx?cmm=20498746&tid=2502305870756326800&start=1

6) Producers and Directors choice.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal have been associated with the big banners for a long periods...Rajashree Films ( in fact "Dosti" success gave fame to both LP and Rajashree Films) for 8 years, Prasad Productions 19 years, Raj Khosla Films 18 years, Subhash Ghai 18 years, Raj Kapoor 10 years, Manoj Kumar 18 years..a very long list....

If you take the record of the seventies when RD Burman was at it's peak..Even than Laxmikant-Pyarelal have completely dominated the Indian Film Music...I am taking top 30 sellers of seventies and here you go.

LP has 12
RDB and KA tie at 5 each
SJ and Khyaam 2 each
Ravider Jain,RR,MM,GM each have 1 album.

I think I have given enough justification...Enjoy the music..

Re: Music Directors of the Millennium...

well again you are giving me numbers, and ratings, I want to emphasize here that most of these numbers and ratings might be biased, they may be true as well. But sorry to say I never go by the reviews / critics or ratings. I experience the music to draw my own opinion.

I never asked for justifications :-) or did I ??? ;-)

I am more concentrating on the versatility of RD, he is the same person who composed songs like :

Samundar main naha kar, Dhanno ki aankhon main and Mehbooba Mehbooba

On the other hand he gave us such great slow numbers:

Khaali Haanth Shaam aayi hai (Ijaazat),  Tum aa gaye ho (aandhi).

Again I am never comparing RD with LP, its just a fact that I am telling! I respect everybody's fan following!

and moreover can u compare "choli ke peeche" with "Samundar main nahakar" or any other song for that matter ??? naah.... I dont feel so, just see that the songs that you choose for comparison should be on the same level. :-)

Re: Music Directors of the Millennium...

BTW a piece of Trivia for u:

R.D. Burman played the mouth organ for his friends Laxmikant-Pyarelal in a song in 'Dosti' and also in a movie for Kalyanji-Anandji

so you see that there was no competition!

Re: Music Directors of the Millennium...

L-P have more melody than r.d.burman.

"rahi manwa dukh ki chinta"

"sawan ka mahina pawan kare"

"aur nahi bas aur nahi"

"saudagar saudagar dil de de dil le kar"

etc.................etc...............................

Re: Music Directors of the Millennium...

RD burman was very gud, sincere and verstile music director but i luv laxmikant pyarelal...!

its the fact that new generation praises pancham da it can b seen that many modern day remixes are of RD burman's songs....

whereas in 1990s LP were confined to B or C grade movies and they avoided using modern age musical instruments like pritam Nadeem sharavan, or ARR thts y subhash ji or raj kapoor abandoned them.

but i must say in 1982 and in 1983 LP deserved the award for prem rog and hero, not RD Burman (won for sanam teri qasam and Masoom respectively).

conclusively, RD burman is not over-hyped BUT LAXMIKANT PYARELAL ARE UNDER-RATED....!!!

apart of the discussion,,,,pritam, himesh are over - rated and music directors like anand raaj anand and ismail darbar are under rated

Re: Music Directors of the Millennium...

@Adeel

Sorry to say that you are the first person whom I have met, who chose Hero over Masoom.

Well I guess you should be given an award for such a great choice, forget Pancham or LP :)

Re: Music Directors of the Millennium...

well said I also agree woth u. RD Burman has copied most of his hit numbers. But LP had its true and natural indian melody music.

I can only compare Shanker Jaikishen with LP no one even near to them. In their fil music they keep in mind what sceene it is who is actor and also the period and place. Abhi ke kisibhi music directors ko iski koi knowledge nahin hai
