There are some actors who can do serious cinema, while some specialize in comedy. Farooq Shaikh, however, does both, and with panache.
Personal life: Farooq Shaikh was born on 25th March 1948, in Baroda. His parents, Mustafa Shaikh (a Mumbai Lawyer) and Farida Shaikh had 4 other children, Farooq being the eldest. He studied in Mumbai: St Mary’s School, St Xavier’s College, followed by a degree in Law from the Siddharth College of Law. He topped it off by enrolling at the famed Film and Television Institute of India (Pune).
He is married to Rupa Jain, his girlfriend of nine years, and has 2 daughters named Shaista and Sanaa.
His film career: In 1973 he starred in his first film: Garm Hava. The film was set in 1947, based on the partition. A hard-hitting film, it was also the last film starring the legendary Balraj Sahni in an extremely powerful role. Garm Hava won 3 Filmfare Awards (Best dialogue writer, story and screenplay), apart from getting nominated for the Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival for Best Director.
These are his initial movies that have done exceptionally well:
• Mere Saath Chal (1974). Also starring the very talented Smita Patil, where she plays a mentally traumatized person. Farooq falls in love with her, though he is supposed to marry another girl. Emotionally riveting film.
• Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977). An iconic film directed by Satyajit Ray, which won 3 Filmfare Awards, including Best Director and Best Film (Critics). It is about 2 eccentric rulers, who in spite of the dire situation that their country is in, continue to play chess all through the day and night. The movie stars Sanjeev Kumar, Saeed Jaffery, Shabana Azmi.
• Gaman (1978): Farooq plays Ghulam Hussain, who leaves his wife (Smita Patil) and mother to work in a different city. The movie encompasses his struggle to not only make both ends meet but also give his family a good lifestyle. Nana Patekar debuted as Vasu. The film won a National Award for Best Music Director.
• Noorie (1979): A romantic film with beautiful locales and great soundtrack, it stars Poonam Dhillon as Farooq’s love interest, whom he goes on to marry in the movie.
• Umrao Jaan (1981): The heartening story of a courtesan (Rekha) who falls in love with the Nawab (Farroq), her heartbreak and what comes later. This film won several awards, including 2 Best Actress awards for Rekha: Filmfare and National Award.
• Chashme Buddoor (1981): This film marked the arrival of Farooq in a comic role. He plays a shy character, who manages to win the attention of the new girl in the neighborhood. The rest of the film is a laugh riot involving the attempts of his roommates to break up the happy couple.
Farooq went on to do a lot of excellent roles, right from the one as Alok Prakash, a photographer in the comedy Lakhon Ki Baat (1984), to Vijay in the hugely acclaimed comedy Peechha Karo (1986), from the demure Suraj Bhandari of Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988), to Dr Charu Das in the romantic mystery Maya Memsaab (1993).
In 1998 Farooq worked in a French film, Le lepidoptere, and his latest film Lahore is scheduled to release sometime this year in India, though it has already won a Special Jury Award for Best Feature Film at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival. His other release in 2009 is Accident on Hill Road.
Farooq has also hosted a show on Television, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai. Aired on Zee TV in 2002, he interviewed celebrities on the show, like Preity Zinta, Shah Rukh Khan and more. Farooq has never won an award, but his brilliant acting has made a mark in Indian cinema and the viewers’ hearts.
