British director, Danny Boyle’s star power doubled over with the success of the Oscar winning Slumdog Milionaire (2008). He was the man behind the cult hit Trainspotting and The Beach.
Basics of Danny Boyle Daniel Boyle was born on 20th October 1956 in Radcliffe, Lancashire, England into an Irish Catholic family. Cinema almost lost him when he expressed an interest to join the clergy as a fourteen year old boy.
Boyle completed his education from the Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton and University of Wales, Bangor.
Danny Boyle on Stage Boyle started off in theater. He was associated with the Joint Stock Theater Company and then with the Royal Court Theater as the Artistic Director (1982 to 1985) and as a Deputy Director (1985 to 1987). The Shakespeare Company saw five productions by Boyle.
One of his plays Edward Bond’s Saved won the Time Out Award.
Danny Boyle on Television Danny Boyle was a television producer at the BBC Northern Ireland. Some of the television films that he directed were Scout and The Venus de Milo Instead in 1987; Monkeys, The Henhouse and The Nightwatch in 1989 and For the Greater Good in 1991.
He also directed the TV mini series Mr Wroe’s Virgins (1993) and episodes for Inspector Morse (1990 & 1992) and Screenplay (1993).
Danny Boyle’s Movies 1995 Shallow Grave was a crime thriller which featured Ewan McGregor with whom Boyle worked frequently. Among the many awards the movie won was the Empire Award for Best Director in 1996.
1996 Trainspotting was an offbeat, black comedy based on a novel by Irvine Welsh. It was ranked ten in the list of Top 100 British Films. The cast included Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle and Kelly McDonald. Boyle plans to make a sequel of the movie, based on the sequel to the novel Porno by Irvine Welsh.
The movie won the BAFTA Scotland Awards for Best Feature Film and the Empire Award for Best Director among others.
1997 A Life Less Ordinary with Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz was also a black comedy but failed at the box office.
2000 The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio was penned by John Hodge with whom Boyle had teamed up earlier. The movie was not as successful as expected.
2002 28 Days Later was a sci-fi movie that was a hit at the box office.
2004 Millions got a good reception. It was about a young boy Damian who loses his mother.
2007 Sunshine was another science fiction movie that was a success. Boyle went on record that he was influenced by other science fiction movies like Solaris, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Apocalypse Now.
2008 Slumdog Millionaire was based on the novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup about a boy who grew up in the Mumbai slums winning on the show Who Wants to be a Millionare? The movie used Indian actors and children from the slums. Even as it showed the terrifying conditions that slum children live in, it was updeat. It became an international success.
Danny Boyle won the Academy Award for Best Director, BAFTA Best Director, Golden Globes – Best Director Motion Picture while the movie and it’s cast also hit jackpot.
